When operating vacation rentals there are always unique situations you come across. Just recently I had a very nice couple rent a condo at Vista Waikoloa at Waikoloa Beach Resort on the Big Island of Hawaii. The husband was wheelchair bound and they also had a caretaker come with them. They had a hospital bed put in the master bedroom for him for his stay. I talked to them several times during their stay and they were having a good time and everything was great.
When they departed, I found the condo in a mess. There were black marks all over the carpet from the wheelchair bringing in black from the asphalt, the walls were marked up from the wheelchair, and a piece was chipped out of one of the doors due to the wheelchair running into it. After all repairs were made, there was $500 worth of damages. We had a $250 deposit, which covered a portion of it and we are requesting the rest. I know if they do not pay it we could take them to small claims court, but the financial part is not as much the issue. The fact the condo was not well taken care of and there was a couple of days it could not be used while it was under repair is more the issue.
This is the third time something similar to this has happened. I was curious if anyone else has experienced a similar problem. I also think that this must be a fairly common occurrence and was wondering how things get handled as I am not really familiar with any vacation rentals that are designed for the wheelchair bound. It seems like over time no one would want to rent to them, but I know that would be discrimination.
