Keeping Your Colorado Real Estate License Current

Once you have completed the real estate courses to earn your Colorado real estate license, you will want to make sure that you keep it active. The state of Colorado requires that your real estate license be renewed every three years on the anniversary of your date of initial licensure. In order to renew your license you must complete the requisite 24 hours of continuing education courses and provide proof of completion with your renewal application.

There is more than one way for a Colorado licensee to complete the required continuing education. The first is to complete the Commission Update Course each year. Four units are earned each year with this course giving you 12 continuing education units during the renewal period. In addition there are 12 elective units needed to meet the continuing education requirement for the renewal. A course that contributes to the professional competency of a licensee in a direct way qualifies as continuing education.

There is a 24 hour course available in Brokerage Administration that will meet the continuing education requirement for license renewal.  Additionally there is a 24 hour Broker transition course available as well. Either of these courses will satisfy the continuing education requirement provided that the course that you choose has not previously been taken for continuing education credit.

A licensee that successfully passes the Colorado state real estate brokers examination will not be required to complete the 24 hours of coursework required to meet the renewal requirement as they will receive a broker license. Continuing education requirements will then be required prior to the third anniversary of the broker license issuance date.

Continuing education courses are will be required for those who wish to reactivate a license that had been made inactive.  Proof of education will be required along with the application to reactivate the license. An expired license will also require that the continuing education requirements are met before the application for reinstatement will be considered.

It is imperative to stay on top of your continuing education to maintain your license’s active status. Three years can fly by in the life of a successful real estate agent or broker and you do not want lose your license because time got away from you. Do not wait until the last minute to take care of something that is so important. Without an active license you will have no real estate career, it is that simple. Keep up with your continuing education units to ensure that your license remains active so you can maintain your success in real estate.

It can be a pain to keep your license current in CO but it is good for consumers to have the industry regulated. Once in a while the continuing ed classes are interesting also…. :) :)
