Nestled down in the valley bowl of the Columbia Basin, Benton City Washington is a small town boasting of large benefits. Benton City is an agriculturally rich community with many privately owned vineyards, orchards, hayfields, pastures, and acreage. The area boasts of sunny days and Indian-like summers with moderate winters. The splendid weather allow for its residents and visitors to enjoy many recreational activities and community festivities.
Many take pleasure in the water activities on the Columbia or Yakima Rivers while others prefer to enjoy the miles of walking/hiking/biking paths available in the area. There is also a large national wildlife and monument area within five miles of Benton City and Rattlesnake Mountain, the largest treeless mountain in Washington. The community loves to turn out for the annual city festivities such as the Benton City Daze, Winter Fest, the Lion’s Club Fourth of July event, a city wide yard sale, car and motorcycle shows, mud bog races, craft shows, as well as a variety of other events.
The small community of Benton City with its newly added Mid Columbia Library and medical clinic sees many cars throughout any particular day. With interstate 82 less than a mile away and the roads through Benton City being a means to get out to Hanford the area sees its fair share of cars but yet the city is traffic light free. The city is currently working out the kinks in the plans for a new business park and an aquatic center.
Benton City’s beginnings were back in 1909 when the Oregon Washington Railroad created a stop the junction of the Walla Walla and Yakima lines. The following year the railroad company built both freight and passenger depots. As the years progressed the community continued to grow and was officially incorporated in 1945. Several years after being incorporated, irrigation was brought to the area by way of the Sunnyside Canal which permitted for more growth in the area.
