By now, most Web surfers are extremely comfortable using Google Search. After all, Google’s search engine dominates the Internet. However, search results are delivered based on complex algorithms that attempt to find the best matches for the phrase you entered. Your search results could contain both authoritative and purely commercial sites. If you’d prefer search results from credible sources, use Google Directory instead of Google Search.
You’ll need to access the Google Directory by clicking the More > Even More link at the top of the Google page. From there, find the Google Directory link and click it. Now, the Web is at your fingertips, neatly categorized into sections such as Arts, Home, Business, Kids and Teens, Science, Computers, News, Shopping, Regional, Games, Recreation, Society, Health, Reference, Sports, and World.
Once you select a category, you are presented with search results that have been hand-selected by actual editors, not a machine. These results are then run through Google’s PageRank technology to further organize the results based on importance. Within each category, search technology takes you deeper into the category, delivering even more relevant search results. Then end result? Credible, informative, and relevant websites!
For example, let’s say that you have been diagnosed with a sleep disorder. Using the regular Google Search, you’d find over 10 million results, sponsored listings likely pitching sleep aids, a Wikipedia entry, and a variety of websites discussing sleep disorders. Some of these websites may be academic and filled with good information while others could be blogs, forums, and other sites that may or may contain the information you need. With Google Directory, you’ll be immediately presented with dozens of prescreened websites from the likes of the Centers for Disease Control, the Nation Institutes of Health, and Stanford University. If the broad results don’t deliver what you’re looking for, dig deeper by searching within that category.
If you want to quickly find relevant websites for any number of topics, consider using the Google Directory. It provides the best of human and machine-based search technologies.

Very interesting! I can’t believe I have used google all these years and never knew that google directory existed. Unfortunately when I searched some of my most important seach phrases my website did not come up. I come up on the top half of page 1 for google search but not google directory. Very disappointing but I will just keep working on my websites and seo.
Very interesting. I had no idea. I question how many people will use it thought as its buried a few pages deep in google? It does sound like something I would use though…the question is will Google ever make it closer to the surface of the splash page?
Hi Carmen, Google uses the DMOZ directory as their source. You should submit your site by either going to dmoz.org or on the bottom of the Google directory there is a Submit Site link. Hope that helps.
Hi Tina,
Good thing, but sorry it’s too many clicks away, people don’t want to click more one or two times and find what they are looking for.
