New Construction at Fort Benning

The long awaited expansion of Fort Benning is finally here.   For the last 5 years  our area has been preparing for the Armor school at Fort Knox to move to Fort Benning as part of the BRAC (Base Realignment) program.     Many builders jumped the gun thinking that this influx would happen sooner rather than later but it looks like it is now imminent as they are mandated to make the move by September of 2011.

Approximately 3 Billion dollars was ear marked for the expansion on Fort Benning of which over 2 Billion has already been spent creating infrastructure for the move.

So now builders are gearing up for a tremendous influx over the spring and summer as 10,000 families (30,000 people) are scheduled to move into the area.   Since Columbus only has a population of about 200,000 people this is a 15% increase.    It seems that the vast majority of people moving in prefer new homes and this will put tremendous pressure on the new home builders in the Columbus and Fort Benning areas.

As Realtors we expect it to be an exciting time as well as overwhelming!
