Adding A Post Excerpt

A post “Excerpt” is the content summary your readers see on the home page of your blog, as well as next to the posts that show up on internal searches.

It’s important to write a good post excerpt so that your readers will know whether or not your particular post is what they’re looking for. On that same note, if your post excerpt isn’t compelling or descriptive enough, the chances of someone clicking through to read the rest of your post significantly drop.

Generally, WordPress will pull the first and second sentence to use as the post excerpt if you haven’t written anything in the designated “Post Excerpt” box under the post editor.

If you’ve added enough detail to your first sentence, then you could simply leave the Post Excerpt box blank and let WordPress do the work.

However, sometimes you may want to add a little more content to help summarize what your post is about.

**This is not the same thing as adding the blog summary under the “All-In-One SEO” section.

The Post Excerpt is mainly for the benefit of your readers on the home page and searching through your blogs categories and tags.
